The Visit is a haunting and morally complex musical, music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and book by Terrence McNally, based on Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s satirical play. It unfolds in Brachen, an impoverished European town burdened by years of hardship.

The world’s wealthiest woman, Claire Zachanassian, returns after a long exile with an outrageous offer: she will save the town from economic collapse in exchange for the life of Anton Schell—the man who betrayed her in their youth. As the townspeople grapple with desperation and temptation, the musical explores themes of greed, revenge, moral compromise, and the haunting power of the past. The story is delivered with bleak romance and dark elegance, peeling back the facade of sentiment to expose human frailty and corruption.
