A momentous play from Britain’s leading living playwright, Sir Tom Stoppard, Leopoldstadt follows one Viennese Jewish family through five turbulent decades

Gathered in the family apartment in a fashionable part of Vienna at the turn of the 20th century are Hermann Merz’s extended family. In Hermann’s eyes, the family has become respectable, but his brother-in-law mathematician, Ludwig, is not sure it is ever possible for a Jew to assimilate.

Over the next 50 years, the Merz family meet over and over in the same room as around them surge war, revolution, impoverishment and the Holocaust itself. Not all will survive to tell their story.

Leopoldstadt is directed by Patrick Marber and designed by Richard Hudson. The 20-plus cast features Olivier award-winner Adrian Scarborough, alongside Faye Castelow, Caroline Gruber, Luke Thallon and Sir Tom Stoppard’s son, Ed Stoppard, as Ludwig.
