Anastasia

A thrilling story of lost identity, love and betrayal set in post-revolutionary Russia opens on Broadway.

In the palace of St Petersburg, the young Grand Duchess Anastasia says a tearful farewell to her grandmother, the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorvna, who is leaving for Paris. But the bloody Bolshevik revolution 10 years later tears apart their plans to be reunited in France when Anastasia grows up.

Another decade on, rumours surface that Anastasia was the only member of the Romanov family to survive execution. Two conmen, Dmitri and Vlad, decide to mould a young girl to impersonate her in the hope of extracting money from the Dowager Empress. The girl they choose is Anya, an amnesiac with few memories of her past but who bears a striking resemblance to the missing princess. It is the start of a dangerous adventure for the young girl who uncovers both love and deceit as she goes in search of her true identity.

This original production, with music and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, and words by Terrence McNally, is based on the 1997 film of the same name.

Anastasia premièred at Hartford Stage in Hartford, Connecticut in May 2016 and won seven prestigious Connecticut Critics Circle Awards. It has been nominated for nine Drama Desk nominations including Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Actress in a Musical (Christy Altomare), Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical (Mary Beth Peil), Outstanding Music (Flaherty), Outstanding Book of a Musical (McNally), and Outstanding Costume Design (Linda Cho). It has also been nominated for 13 Outer Critics Circle and Drama League Awards and has just been recognised with two Tony awards nominations (Peil for Best Featured Actress in a Musical and Cho for Best Costume Design).
