Into the woods

This inventive and playfully imaginative staging of Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine serves as a fitting tribute to the late composer’s enduring influence on musical theatre.

The production features a standout ensemble cast including Julian Bleach, Audrey Brisson, Nicola Hughes, Rhashan Stone and Alex Young, alongside Gillian Bevan, Nathanael Campbell, Maria Conneely, Lauren Conroy, Phoebe Fildes, Samuel Holmes, Charlotte Jaconelli, Henry Jenkinson and Barney Wilkinson.

At its heart, the story unfolds through the imagination of a young girl playing with her grandfather’s toy theatre, conjuring an upside down fairytale world. A baker and his wife embark on a quest to break a curse that has left them childless, searching for four magical objects along the way. Their journey brings them into contact with familiar figures including Little Red Riding Hood and her beguiling Wolf, Rapunzel, Cinderella, a pair of charming Princes and their less than charming Stepsisters, Jack of beanstalk fame and a formidable Witch.

This richly imagined world is brought to life by a distinguished creative team led by director Terry Gilliam alongside co-director and choreographer Leah Hausman. With design by Jon Bausor and costumes by Antony McDonald, the production promises a visually striking and ambitious staging at Theatre Royal Bath.

“Terry Gillam’s bath-rescued into the woods is beautiful to behold – the irony is that it ideally needs a longer run in a bigger theatre to attain perfection”
