Andrew Scott takes the lead in a modernist Hamlet which feels fresh, unpredictable and lucid

In a minimalist glass palace of Elsinore – with screens showing rolling news of a Norwegian invasion – Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, is contemplating his father’s funeral. He is also adjusting to the fact that his mother Gertrude has already remarried his uncle Claudius, who has declared himself king.

Suspecting foul play, and visited by his father’s ghost, Hamlet resolves to bring his father’s killer to justice. But his decision is to have terrible consequences for those he loves most.

This new production of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, directed by the Almeida Theatre’s Associate Director Robert Icke (Mary Stuart, Uncle Vanya, Oresteia, Mr Burns, 1984) stars BAFTA- and Olivier Award-winner Andrew Scott (Sherlock, Birdland, Cock, Pride) as the Danish prince, Juliet Stevenson as Gertrude and Jessica Brown Findlay as Ophelia.
