Thrilling musical The Life nominated for five “Offies”

February 2018

Heartfelt new musical The Life, which is supported by Bruno Wang Productions, has received five nominations in the prestigious 2018 Off West End Theatre Awards (known as the Offies).

The Life, a thrilling exposé of the darker side of 1980s’ New York, has received nominations for Best New Musical and Best Musical Production, plus nods for Best Female Performance in a Musical (T’Shan Williams), Best Female Supporting Performance in a Musical (Sharon D Clarke) and Best Male Supporting Performance in a Musical (Cornell S John).

Described by the New York Times as “Broadway’s best kept secret”, The Life is directed by Michael Blakemore, who was in charge of the original production when it was first staged 20 years ago. At that time, The Life received 12 Tony Nominations, of which it won two, and nine Drama Desk Awards, of which it won three including Best Musical.

Critics have applauded the show, which features a rarely heard score by celebrated composer Cy Coleman (City of Angels, Sweet Charity). The Independent gave it five stars, claiming it would be “a crime if this show does not transfer to the West End”.

The Offies were launched eight years ago to celebrate the best productions staged in 80 Off West End venues around London. Ceremony hosts and presenters have included Sir Ian McKellen, Sir Patrick Stewart and David Morrissey.

This year, the awards will be presented on Sunday 4th March at The Albany, Deptford with guest presenters including actors Katie Brayben, Robin Soans, Louise Jameson and Linda Marlowe plus Isobel Waller-Bridge (sound designer), Catherine Kodicek (costume designer) and Stephen Mear (choreographer).
